Tournament Raises $43,000 for Shoals Area Special Olympics and Special Needs Classrooms
The Shoals community came together in an extraordinary display of generosity and sportsmanship at the recent tournament held at Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club on April 22, 2024. Over 200 players, sponsors, and supporters gathered for a day of golfing excellence, all in the name of supporting a cause close to their hearts.
The event, organized to benefit the Shoals Area Special Olympics and special needs classrooms, surpassed all expectations by raising an impressive $43,000. This substantial sum will make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals with special needs in our community.
The success of the tournament was made possible through the unwavering support of sponsors, with Martin Supply stepping up as the title sponsor and Long Lewis Foundation proudly serving as the Platinum Sponsor. Their commitment to the cause exemplifies the spirit of generosity and community that defines the Shoals area.
“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who participated, sponsored, and supported this tournament,” said Douglas Ruggles, Co-CEO of Martin Supply. “Together, we have made a significant impact on the lives of individuals with special needs in the Shoals area. This event demonstrates what can be achieved when a community comes together for a common cause.”
The funds raised from the tournament will give a $10,000 donation towards the development of two adaptive playgrounds. These playgrounds will be constructed at Hibbett School in Florence and Muscle Shoals Middle School. Spearheaded by Russell Medford of Muscle Shoals Meets, this $140,000 project aims to enhance accessibility and inclusivity in our community. The initiative is closely tied to the upcoming charity concert scheduled for August 23 and 24 at Norton Auditorium in Florence, Alabama. Organized by the Fiddleworms, the event will feature various guest performances. Notably, the Fiddleworms have been instrumental in hosting the Muscle Shoals Meets shows for the past six years, demonstrating unwavering support for numerous local charities.
The success of the tournament serves as a testament to the generosity and compassion of the Shoals community. It is a reminder of the profound difference that can be made when individuals unite to support those who can’t help themselves.
