When a sudden cardiac arrest happens at work, every second counts. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) can help save lives, but only if they’re used the right way. Unfortunately, many companies make simple mistakes that can cost valuable time or even lives.
Here are the top 5 mistakes to avoid when it comes to AEDs and cardiac safety:
1. Not Having an AED On-Site
The biggest mistake? Not having an AED at all. Sudden cardiac events can happen to anyone, at any time, even if you are relatively healthy otherwise. Without an AED nearby, survival rates drop fast. AEDs are easy to use and can double or triple someone’s chance of survival when used quickly.
2. Not Using High-Quality CPR with the AED
An AED is powerful, but it works best with good CPR. High-quality chest compressions keep oxygen flowing to the brain while the AED works to restart the heart. Make sure your team knows how to combine CPR and AED use properly. Martin Supply’s Regional Safety Specialist, Ryan Griffin, says this is key to potentially saving a person’s life.
“Don’t be afraid, and give good, quality depth of compressions. Because when this person is in sudden cardiac arrest, you have to become their heartbeat,” Griffin says. “100 beats per minute on the person’s sternum, right above their heart.
3. Poor Visibility and Access
It’s not enough to just own an AED. People need to find it and find it quickly. Many workplaces tuck AEDs in cabinets, back rooms, or hard-to-see spots. Make sure your AED is clearly marked, placed in a central area, and never blocked by equipment or storage.
4. Lack of Training
AEDs are simple to use, but training is still essential. Workers should feel confident using the device and giving CPR. Hold regular training sessions so your team can act quickly and stay calm during an emergency.
5. Skipping AED Maintenance
Like any safety equipment, AEDs need regular upkeep. Batteries expire. Pads dry out. And a broken AED won’t help anyone. Create a checklist to inspect your AEDs each month and replace parts as needed. That’s the only way to be sure your equipment is in good-quality condition when it’s needed. Martin Supply’s safety team offers a detailed inspection of your AED and first aid kits to ensure your equipment is operating correctly.
