RoHS and Fasteners – What you need to know

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) in its current iteration affects 10 different elements for manufactured products, the most recent being added by RoHS3 in 2016. Those elements and their restricted levels are listed below:

  • Lead (Pb): < 1000 ppm
  • Mercury (Hg): < 100 ppm
  • Cadmium (Cd): < 100 ppm
  • Hexavalent Chromium: (Cr VI) < 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB): < 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE): < 1000 ppm
  • Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP): < 1000 ppm
  • Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP): < 1000 ppm
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): < 1000 ppm
  • Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP): < 1000 ppm

This has been adopted in both Europe and California, so it is important for anyone selling into those markets to be certain that every piece of their finished product meets those standards. Production fastening is no different. It is important for manufacturers to make sure that their suppliers are below all RoHS levels and not putting them into non-compliance.
