In this article, we had the privilege of sitting down with Jessica to learn more about her experiences, challenges, and insights as a woman in the world of Industrial Distribution. Her responses to our questions offer invaluable wisdom and inspiration for other women considering a career in this field.

How did you work your way into the career you are in now? 

Sixteen years ago, I started as a Customer Service Representative in the safety distribution world that I didn’t even know existed. I’m thankful for my former company’s owners, Charlie and Sandy Hall, for giving me an opportunity to work with them and many other great people. With their, and Martin’s, support and encouragement I have been given many opportunities to grow and learn in different areas of the business that have helped me be successful in my career.

What advice would you give women looking to succeed in this industry?

Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, ask questions, and be open to learning about different areas of the industry.  

What steps can companies take to recruit more women into roles like yours? 

From personal experience, look outside the box at the people you may encounter at the grocery or hardware store, for instance, that you see on a regular basis. Time after time that you see them, do you see a person with a good work ethic, communication skills, and someone who cares about the customers they help?

What’s most rewarding about working in your current role?

Helping our teams, whether it be accounting, warehouse, customer service, sales, and our customers all be successful.

What does it take to be successful in a role like yours?

Being detail-oriented and patient.
