Meet Lori Fisher, District Manager at Martin Supply

Lori Fisher, District Manager at Martin Supply, breaks barriers as a woman in industrial distribution. In this interview, we learn more about her journey in the industry and the insights she offers to aspiring women in the field.

How did you work your way into the career you are in now?

I began work in this industry as an expediter. I worked my way up through holding various positions; Customer Service Representative, Customer Service Representative Manager, Project Manager, and Senior Manager, to list a few. Each role came with its own challenges. Challenges are something I find intriguing, as it allows me to research, learn, train, teach and help both the customer and my team.

What advice would you give women looking to succeed in this industry?

My advice to women is to first find their voice and their strength and use it. Research and learn as much as you can about the role you hold, and never stop listening, learning, and growing. Do not be afraid to stand up for what you have learned, experiences you have faced and always trust your instinct.

What steps can companies take to recruit more women into roles like yours?

One step I love to use is looking within our company for women wanting growth and helping them create their path. A company can create and provide support groups, leadership trainings, mentorship programs with other women in leadership roles, and let it be known what opportunities a company has to offer.

What’s most rewarding about working in your current role?

One of the most rewarding things I have experienced is being able to help someone advance in our industry. It is an awesome feeling knowing that I helped coach and mentor an associate into becoming an irreplaceable asset to our company. A close second would be the opportunity to work with a diverse group of individuals across the U.S, both colleagues and customers.

What does it take to be successful in a role like yours?

Knowledge, patience and understanding for both my customers and my team. I must know my abilities and limitations to each situation and that of my team members, as they can be different in each moment. I have learned that I must maintain a positive attitude, even in a difficult situation. I must be able to provide my team with opportunities for them to advance by investing in their careers and helping them develop their skills or grow new ones, while also having the ability to have a courageous conversation when needed.
