Introducing Mitzi Cikra, Regional Account Manager at Martin Supply. In this interview, we explore Mitzi’s career, learning more on her perspective and insights working with fasteners in industrial distribution.

How did you work your way into the career you are in now? 

I took a temporary job answering the phones as I finished my degree. I had NO plans to be in or stay in the fastener industry, but I had a great boss who saw potential in me and taught me everything she could stuff into my brain. She was part of the family who owned the business, and she was tough and brilliant. She taught me not only technical aspects, but she influenced my work ethic and my confidence. I went on to become the first female Field Sales Rep in the company, which had been in business 25 years.

What advice would you give women looking to succeed in this industry?

Tenacity. You have to sell internally and externally, all the time. If you are confident in your opinions, stand by them and communicate them firmly, but with grace and respect. Always remember you are representing the company, the brand(s), and YOURSELF.

What steps can companies take to recruit more women into roles like yours? 

I have watched an evolution in the fastener industry. We have created clubs, social media outlets, outreach and scholarship programs just for women in the business. We should continue to do so. I like the fact that we promote women without being negative towards any other groups of people.

What’s most rewarding about working in your current role?

Meeting new people. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the fine folks at Martin, as well as the vendor and customer contacts. The best part is obtaining new business opportunities and working to successfully close on them.

What does it take to be successful in a role like yours?

Flexibility and patience.
