Concussions in the Workplace

When you think of a concussion, you typically think of athletes playing contact sports. But, not all concussions happen on the field. More concussions are being reported in the workplace and they can be complex and costly to treat.

What is a concussion?

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) a concussion is “a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, jolt to the head or a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells”.

What are the symptoms of a concussion?

Physical symptoms of a concussion may include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Balance and visual problems
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to noise and light
  • Tingling and numbness
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Mental fogginess or slowing down
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Forgetfulness and confusion

Additional signs might be answering questions slowly or repeating questions, irritability, sadness or nervousness. They may also show signs of drowsiness, sleep more or less than usual, or have trouble falling asleep.

What are common causes of concussions at work?

Slips, trips and falls, strikes to the head, or motor vehicle accidents can lead to concussions at work. Inanimate objects, such as falling boxes, tools or unmarked low shelving might cause a strike to the head.

How can I prevent concussions at work?

Concussions in the workplace can be prevented with the following actions:

  • Make sure walkways and workspaces are free of clutter, cords, puddles of water or anything else that could cause a slip, trip or fall.
  • Use proper signage to alert employees of wet surfaces or low ceiling areas.
  • Use handrails when taking the stairs.
  • Avoid standing on chairs, desks or tables. Use a step stool instead and use ladders properly.
  • Use caution when working from heights. Never stand on the top two steps of a ladder.
  • If a job requires wearing a helmet, make sure it’s properly fitted and in good condition.

If your workplace requires hard hats, Martin can make sure your workers have the right head protection solution for your operation and can conduct fit testing at the worksite. Contact your Martin Sales Rep or call 800.828.8116.
