Training Third Parties to be Safe in Your Facility
Every workplace has their own specific hazards – chemicals, height, confined spaces, and many, many more. When introducing a contractor or other third party to your facility, how can you make sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to safety hazards and procedures? Without proper instruction, third-party workers and your own team could be at risk. Proper training and communication could be the difference when working with sensitive materials or in dangerous circumstances.
Communication Issues
If contractors don’t understand your facility’s hazards, the risk of incident is much higher. Thorough explanations should be offered before those third-party workers ever walk onto the plant floor to prevent miscommunication. This might take time in the beginning, but it makes everyone safer in the long run.
Lack of Familiarity
If a contractor is hired to use your equipment or enter any hazardous areas in your facility, they need to be prepared. The tendencies and functions of the equipment is necessary information to operate it safely and without issue, potentially saving yourself a headache in the future.
Equipment Compatibility
When a contractor brings in their own equipment, it may not be compatible with your facility’s hazards. For example, any equipment that creates heat cannot be operated near flammable chemicals or other combustible substances. These types of hazards should be discussed with the third party before operations begin.
A great way to get through these steps is by performing a General Contractor Training. This training can either be 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours long and can cover a significant amount of common workplace safety hazards. Martin Supply’s safety professionals can also custom tailor this training to cover the specific hazards in your facility, reducing the time it takes for your team to begin work. Martin Supply has safety professionals who are qualified to give these trainings on a wide range of topics, which are licensed and authorized through the OSHA Outreach Program.
Martin’s training is a hands-on experience, where contractors will be able to work with the equipment in your facility. This will give them ample time to learn the best practices for their job site, establish clear communication, and familiarize themselves with the tools. Martin’s trainers will also reserve a select number of seats for your employees at no charge.
